Parippu vada (Dal vada/ Dal fritters)

This is a very famous snack item in India but the ingredients may vary from state to state. We can add raw rice along with dal that will enhance the crispiness. I prefer food processor other than mixer grinder for grinding because I noticed that first one gives crispy dal fritters than other. 

This is my husband's favorite snack but he doesn't like garlic in it so for him I used to avoid garlic. 


Chana dal                                                    : 1 ½ cup

Masoor dal                                                  : ½ cup

Chopped onion / shallot                                : ½ cup

Chopped green chilli                                     : 2 tsp

Chopped garlic                                             : 1 tsp

Turmeric powder                                          : ¼ tsp

Chilli powder                                                : ½ tsp

Curry leaves and coriander leaves              : 1 tsp

Salt for taste

Oil for fry

  1. Soak chana dal and masoor dal for 2-3 hour and drain 
  2. Grind this in food processor or mixer grinder without adding water
  3. Add chopped onion, green chilli, garlic, turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt to ground dal mixture. Mix well 
  4. Finally add curry leaves and coriander leaves
  5. Heat oil in a pan at medium high flame
  6. Take hand full of dal mixture and make round shape with your palm
  7. Deep fry in hot oil until both side get golden brown colour
  8. Drain excess oil and serve hot
