Unnakkaya/Kayada(Banana roll/ Plantain roll)

Unnakkaya is a famous traditional snack item in Malabar region of Kerala. Especially during Ramadan iftar time it is commonly preparing in all Muslim house. I don't know who is the master brain behind this delicious recipe but we all know whoever it is he or she gave exact name for it ' Unnakkaya'.  Unnakkaya is malayam meaning of cotton pod,  yes it is making as elongated cotton pod shape. As it's shape, it's taste also amazing. 

We can prepare unnakkaya with two different fillings both are tasty. It can use as appetizer and as evening snack. 

Banana (semi ripe)                     :              3nos
Oil for frying
Filling 1
Grated coconut                          :               1 ½cup
Sugar                                         :               3-4 tbsp
Cashew nuts                               :               1 tbsp (sliced)
Cardamom powder                    :               ½ tsp
Ghee                                          :               1 tbsp
Filling 2
Eggs                                           :               4 nos
Sugar                                         :               2 tbsp
Raisins                                        :               1 tbsp
Ghee                                           :               1tbsp

  1. Cut the bananas in to two pieces and cook these in a boiling water until it cooks well (cuts will form on outer skin)
  2. Drain off the water and peel out the outer skin
  3. Grind it into smooth dough or mash it with heavy spoon or wooden rod without adding water. Try to grind before it cool
Filling 1
    1. Mix the grated coconut with sugar in a pan and saute until light golden colour
    2. Fry the cashew nuts in ghee then add this with ghee into above mixture
    3. Finally add cardamom and mix well. Take out from the fire and let it cool
Filling 2
    1.  Mix the egg, sugar and cardamom powder in a bowl.
        In a pan heat  ghee and fry  raisins
    2.  Add egg mixture into it scramble nicely. Take out from the fire and let it cool
How to make roll
  1. grease your palm with oil
  1. Take a small ball of banana dough and flatten it with finger on your palm
  2. Add filling1 on to it , close the edges and roll it in to a cotton pod shape or unnakkaya
  3. Do the filling 2 same as above in a separate banana ball
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan and deep fry the unnakkaya until it becomes golden colour
